Harvesting Garlic

We have been growing and harvesting garlic for many years. It’s easy and takes very little care.

Harvest your garlic in mid to late July, depending on the weather. You want to make sure the leaves and stalk are dried.  You also want the ground to be somewhat dry when harvesting so the dirt comes off easily. We pull the garlic stem and all and hang it in the garage to dry for a couple weeks.

Once dry we cut off the stem leaving about an half inch above the bulb, trim off the roots and remove the very outer skin with all the dirt on it.

After harvesting and cleaning the bulbs we store our garlic in a mesh bag like you get onions in and keep it in the basement or a cool place for later use.  It will last up to a year if properly stored.

I save a few of the larger bulbs for planting in October for next years harvest! We will cover that in a post this fall.

Check out our recipe page for easy peeling and storing of garlic cloves.
