Momocho
Momocho, Modern Mex
We absolutely love the experience of trying a new restaurant for the very first time. Even though it has been around for a while, we just finally got to experience it’s amazing cuisine.
Momocho is not your typical Mexican restaurant and that is what makes it so unique. Everything from the chips and salsa to the desert had its own unique flavor profile. They are known for their different styles of guacamole, even though it was delicious I was more impressed with their selection of housemade salsas. Both were delicious but guacamole is something I make all the time, so for me not a big deal especially at $10 a bowl.
Since this was date night we indulged in a tasting of the menu. Happy hour is from 5 to 6:30 which includes $5 margaritas and other specials. You have a choice of different types of salt rimmed glass, I decided to try the chili lime salt for my perfect margarita, and it was exactly that, perfect!
The waiter suggested we try their queso fundido with the chorizo sausage and a fried egg on the top. That excellent suggestion along with his others earned him a very nice tip, he really knew and understood the menu well. The tiquitos are half price during happy hour and a must to try. Our friends ordered the Carnitas and the Remolacha, a roasted beet and spinach tiquito. They are served fajita style on a bed of grilled onions and peppers with bubbling cheese in a cast-iron skillet, served with warm corn tortillas and their own unique salsas, one made from puréed pumpkin seeds.
Now the entrées were a little pricey but well worth it for the quality and craftsmanship that went into creating these dishes.
dos equis braised beef short rib tamales | red + green mole sauces | crema mexicano 19, this dish had at least 8 ounces of meat on top of open corn tamales sitting on their husks, the two mole sauces were outstanding.
pork chop al carbon | smoked gouda tamale dumplings | oaxacan red chile + chocolate molé 21 pictured above. The pork on this dish was cooked to a perfect medium temperature that was suggested by the chef. Again, the sauces were unique and different than any other dish we tried.
Our waiter now suggested we finish our meal with their Mexican chocolate pots de creme. The four of us shared this and it was just enough to cleanse the palate and complete this awesome dining experience. The chocolate cream is made with just a hint of a smoked chipotle pepper.
Momocho is definitely a place we would return to again. It is in a quaint little neighborhood of Cleveland OH, Ohio City. The dining room is very small but they take reservations for parties of six and under and say to expect a two hour dining experience, this was accurate. The website link is here with their other location in Lakewood Ohio. Momocho
